A journey through time to the pile dwellings at Lake Keutschach
On 27 September 2026, the Pile Dwellings Trust will be taking part in Heritage Day and invites you to join a walk around the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps’.
The ‘Journey through time to the pile dwellings’ leads to the hidden traces of the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Lake Keutschach. Although the remains of these prehistoric settlements now lie underwater, their history and significance can still be experienced on land. During a leisurely walk along Lake Keutschach and through the Ramsar Moor, participants will learn how people lived around 6,000 years ago, what unique archaeological artefacts have survived to this day, and how these are being protected for future generations. The tour concludes with a visit to the ‘Keutschach World Heritage Window’, an interactive display case featuring original finds from the pile dwellings in Lake Keutschach, which offers fascinating insights into the lives of the lake’s first settlers.
