International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage
Today we celebrate!
The International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage, celebrated annually on 21st August, provides a global platform to raise awareness, encourage dialogue, and strengthen cooperation for the protection of humanity’s submerged cultural legacy, found in our oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes.
The International Day celebrates the essential contribution of underwater cultural heritage to science, education and the cultural identity of peoples, and all those who dedicate their time to its protection.
Together, once a year, voices unite to raise the alarm on emerging threats, encourage responsible and sustainable tourism, and support efforts to stop illicit activities. Above all, the International Day brings people and countries together, building a global movement to protect underwater cultural heritage and ensure it remains safeguarded for younger and future generations.
