The site of Wollmatingen-Langenrain was discovered between 1881 and 1882, by D. Nägeli, and partially excavated by him and L. Leiner, in 1882.The site is a rare, late Bronze Age settlement on the Lake of Constance, with an extensive and well preserved archaeological layer that remains unexplored and is protected by thick sandy sediment. The topographic location of the site, at the mouth of the River Rhine into the Untersee, appears to have been ideal for trade and transport.

The site and its protective buffer zone are located in a nature reserve. It is regularly monitored and controlled by the Department of Antiquities and Monuments.
